Welcome to Imagining Otherwise
How might we learn to walk beautifully upon the earth?
That’s the question driving this Substack. I'm a theologian, learning designer, and fantasy novelist (or at least, I'm striving to be), captivated by creation, literature, the imagination, and the modern experience of disenchantment—that subtle but pervasive sense that something vital has gone out of our lives.
Ursula Le Guin wrote, "We need to relearn our being” in the world. She was addressing our fractured relationship with the natural world, but her words resonate deeply with the broader sense of disconnection many of us feel in our modern lives. Somewhere, somehow, we have become lost. How might we find our way again?
This Substack is a space for me to wrestle with these questions—a place to explore what I think, how I feel, and what I yearn to create. For over fifteen years, I've written and taught about theology, grappling with the ways we make sense of the world. Now I'm also turning to fantasy—a genre I believe holds a unique power to help us re-imagine our place in the cosmos and, perhaps, relearn our being in the world. Your subscriptions help fund this journey and allow me to dedicate more time to writing.
Join me by subscribing. Paid subscribers get exclusive content, full access to the archives, and the chance to be part of a conversation about how we might re-enchant our world. And for those who want to support this project in a deeper way, becoming a Founding Member grants all of the above, plus a special thank you in the acknowledgements of my novel if (when?) it is published.
I live in Auckland, New Zealand with my wife and three children, and I’m the author of three non-fiction books, including Look at the Birds in the Air. I'm now pouring my heart into my first novel.
Alongside being a writer, I am also a Learning Experience Designer with over 15 years of experience helping individuals and teams craft excellent learning experiences. Check out my website.
I'm excited to explore these questions with you. Subscribe below and let's imagine otherwise, together.
